What is propecia for?

Sometimes you hear the scientific name for something and you think, “Huh?” Take androgenetic alopecia as an example. Most people will not know what that is. However, propecia was originally designed for a quite different use. The technical description of its effect is as an enzyme inhibitor and it is prescribed to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This is an enlargement of the prostate that causes difficulty when urinating. As the growth gets more pronounced, it begins to obstruct the urethra so you will have to wait for the flow to begin and it will take longer for the urine to drain out of you. It also means you will need to go to the toilet more often which forces you to get up during the night. Because there are real risks if you have to rely on surgery, propecia is relied on to slow the growth, reducing the size of the prostate and delaying the need for surgical intervention. As in treatment for hair loss (which was an unexpected side effect of the BPH medication), the beneficial effect only lasts as long as you take the medication.

As a general warning: this medication is not for women. Indeed, even handling the pills may cause some absorption of the drug through the skin and, if the woman is pregnant, it can damage a male foetus.
