Is there a cure for hair loss?

As with all such questions, the answer is, “It depends”. If the cause of the loss is a reaction to illness or its treatment, curing the illness or changing the treatment, will usually allow your hair to regrow. There are also scalp infections that can be cured and different treatments can correct hormonal imbalances if that is the cause.

However, the key medication for men is Propecia which is usually available as a prescription-only medication. It comes in 1mg and 5mg pills which are taken daily. There are two very important things to note. This drug needs to build up slowly in the body and it may be many months before you see any change. This slowness of response should not tempt you to take more than the prescribed dose. Taking too much of this drug can lead to loss of libido, a reduction in the amount of semen produced and pain in your testicles. The second point is that the effect only lasts so long as you continue taking the drug. Once you start, you have to keep going if you want to keep baldness at bay.

As most men will know, there is very little that can be done to conceal spreading baldness with changes of hairstyle. If all else fails, the choice is between the new hair weaves, hairpieces and wigs (which can look quite convincing), or shaving the scalp and proudly going bald as a fashion statement.
