What causes hair loss?

At any once time, about 90% of the hair on your head is growing. Each hair usually grows about 1cm per month. The remaining 10% of your hair is “resting” after growth and, after about 10 weeks, it falls out. If all is well, new hair then grows in the place of the old. This means that some hairs fall from your scalp every day. It is perfectly natural and applies equally to both sexes.

The so-called male-pattern baldness first appears as a receding hair line and a bald patch that appears on the top of the head. This is usually an inherited trait appearing at an early age and leading fairly quickly to almost complete baldness. In female-pattern baldness, the hair becomes uniformly thin over the entire scalp.

In addition to the inherited trait, stress and shock can cause substantial hair fall. This may simply be the general stress or living or the body’s response to major illness or surgery. Women can lose their hair after giving birth. In these cases, the hair will usually grow back naturally when the mind and body are calm again. But if the fall is due to diabetes, thyroid problems or a shift in your hormonal balance, more formal treatment may help to stop further loss. Some medications and treatments also cause baldness, e.g. chemotherapy and some antidepressants.
